The Portsmouth That Has Passed
A Panorama of a Thousand Years
Yesterday I found this old book tucked away at the back of a shelf; it was passed down to me a few years ago from my dad and I'd completely forgotten about it since.
The book takes a journalistic approach to Portsmouth's history; looking at many of the events that occurred between 491 B.C. up to 1987.
Originally the book started as a project by William G. Gates, and he was still busy working on The Portsmouth That Has Passed when he died at the age of 90, the book was the completed by his colleague F.K.H Young and first published in 1946.
This second edition was updated in 1987 by Nigel Peake and printed by Portsmouth Publishing and Printing Ltd. in conjunction with The News.
Here I've scanned in twenty pages and photos from the book:

Future of Web Design Conference 2010
Another Future of Web Design has passed and I can say it exceeded all of my expectations, this years was the best conference I have ever attended.
Not only were the talks and presentations of a much higher standard and quality, but there were two tracks to choose from; double the choice!
My favourite talks from the two days were Dan Cederholm’s, Simon Colluson’s, Paul Boag’s and the Web Standardistas.
One of the things I personally enjoy and find most value in, maybe a tiny little bit more than the talks themselves, is the networking; and this year the breaks were slightly longer and there were speed networking sessions. There was definitely a focus on networking which gave me the opportunity to chat with many great people.
Overall this FOWD was of a much higher standard and thoroughly enjoyable.
Here’s a selection of photos I took over the two days:
You can view the whole set on Flickr:
Oh, there was another thing. Some of you may have heard me talk about this, some of you may not. But over the years I’ve met Paul Boag a handful of times and each and every time he’s either been rude to me, completely ignored me or totally forgotten who I am.
I chatted with Paul about this and I reminded him of all the times we’ve met and all the things he’s done.
He very kindly apologised and sent out this great tweet, and as a result I think I can safely say he’ll never forget me again.
Also, here’s a photo of Paul from last year’s FOWD when he refused to have his photo taken, but I took one anyway:
Adam Wintle Design also has a new Facebook fan page which you can join here:

The Future of Web Design conference, only one week to go!
This time next Tuesday the Future of Web Design conference in London will be underway.
A friend and business associate Tom McLeod is flying over from Washington DC to speak at the event about how to make your web design business even more successful.
This year’s event is spread over two days and has a two track format. Make sure you watch Tom’s presentation in track two on day two during the afternoon slot at 2:45pm. Its going to be unmissable, here’s a little more info:
Tom’s also the president of PageLime, an easy-to-use remote Content Management System; and I’m their UK Rep, so make sure if you’ve got any PageLime questions to come and find us.
And lets not forget I’ll be fully promoting Adam Wintle Design this year, so be sure to ask me for one of my new business cards :)

Trying out the iPad
On Tuesday I finally had the chance to get my hands on an iPad (@SydLawrence was kind enough to bring his along to Winchester Web). The device was the non-3G version, so there had to be an available wifi connection to be able to get online.
I had about twenty minutes with the iPad, I immediately thought it was smaller and heavier that I’d imagined, but these two physical features were quickly forgotten as soon as I began using the device. The iPad experience is very submerging, because there’s very little besides the screen whatever you’re using the device for pretty much becomes the device.
I tried out a game called Dungeon Hunter, a hack-and-slash like Diablo and Baldur’s Gate, which I already own on the iPhone. On the larger screen the game became ten times better, the iPad felt perfect for that type of casual gaming and I can imagine similar titles would be just as good. I also tried a handful of utility apps which were all great, unfortunately there weren’t any wifi spots available so I didn’t get the chance to fully test out the keyboard.
Overall I was surprised by how much I liked using the iPad, I’ve been quite sceptical as to whether I would find a use for an in-between type of device; but that’s not to say I’m completely sold. If I were to seriously consider buying one I’d want to wait a little longer, at least until there’s some good photo editing apps and maybe a HTML editor; then I’d probably be sold!
Here’s a few more photos of the iPad from Winchester Web.

WoPC has its first iPad visitor! (Update: and Lord Likely)
Yesterday the World of Playing Cards had its first iPad visitor. Exciting!
It looks like whoever it was lived in Phoenix, Arizona.
Update (09/04/10): Also another client’s website, Lord Likely, has had visitors catching up on the latest content using their iPads!
The two readers were from Crystal Lake and Corona and it looks like they had quite a lengthy visit and surfed around the site a fair bit too.

A conversation with my dad: Thoughts on news publishing and Rupert Murdoch
I asked my dad’s opinion on this article and the following video:
(In my opinion the video is well worth the 15 minutes.)
My dad replied: “Well is he [Murdoch] a grumpy old git or a wise old man? Old men used to venerated as wise and full of experience, but things seem to be different today. Does he have any students who believe in his model? When the factors which make a situation all change over time, then the situation has to change, and you cannot stick to an old ‘model’ just because it was right in the past… Some people argue that we must “go back to the good old days” but the times have changed. Why hasn’t he got dozens of advisors telling him how to be ‘cool’?”
I replied: “I think sometimes Rupert Murdoch is unbelievably wise and insightful, but the occasions when he is are becoming rare. I imagine Murdoch has a lot of advisors, but like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or perhaps even Steven Spielburg, his name and face is the brand or product they’ve created and it has to sound like the ideas are coming straight from his mind; yet in reality a lot of the products and ideas would be coming from a whole team of creative people.
I’ve watched a lot of videos and read a lot of articles about Rupert Murdoch and apparently he’s got a red hot temper, slamming his fists on tables and telling employees to fuck off; I think his attitude towards change and telling his advisors that they’re wrong has held him and his newspapers back in this more digital world.
It seems he’s now only starting to realise that his advisors were probably right all along; he’s recently been heavily endorsing the iPad saying it will “save the newspaper industry” - but I don’t believe that this new approach is completely his idea, I think he’s probably just seeing no choice but to move with the times before its far too late.
And the newspaper industry doesn’t need saving, as the Guardian just refer to their website as a “digital newspaper” and have no intentions of ever putting up a paywall for a source of revenue, and instead will support the publication through advertising revenue.
I think Murdoch’s decision to try and force people into buying the content is backwards, and like you said, just trying to make people stick to the old model when its pretty much going to be impossible; just like with CDs and MP3s. People still want to listen to music, so the music industry adapts. People still want news so that also needs to adapt.”
I just thought I’d put that out there - if anybody read through the whole thing feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts on the subject.
